During World War II blue jean were usually worn by workers especially in factories. During this time, men’s jeans had the zipper down the front, where women’s jeans had the zipper down the right side. In the 60’s men and women’s’ jeans both had the zipper down the front. Blue jeans were made popular by teenagers and young adults to protest the uncomfortable clothing they worn at younger ages. During the 1970’s, wearing of blue jeans became more acceptable. Donald freeman is known as one of the main pioneers of denim blue jeans. Jeans were expensive during the cold war since the Soviet Union blocked all the American exports. A main producer of denim jeans is Levi Strauss.
Since the beginning of jeans to the present day there have been many different variations of types of jeans like ankle jeans, bell bottoms, carpenter jeans and phat jeans.
The origins of bell bottoms are uncertain but are believed to begin with the U.S. Navy. They were very popular in the late sixties and the early seventies. The original men’s bell bottom pants and flares from the 1970s are collectible vintage clothing items. Worn by men to attend retro theme disco parties, worn in retro revival bands, and to wear clubbing
Carpenter jeans were used mainly by carpenters that is where the jeans got their name. Carpenter jeans are usually made of denim. These are usually the blue jeans we still see today. A hammer loop is also put on the jeans so that a carpenter can hold his hammer in his jeans. Other features include extra pockets, sometimes located on the outer thighs, and extra rivets for durability. Another feature is wider belt loops, to accommodate a wider, thicker belt.
Phat pants are a cut of jeans worn by ravers that are fitted at the waist but widen down the legs all the way to the ground where they enclose the feet due to their width. Phat pants are often worn with braces that are not designed to be worn over the shoulders. They hang loosely on the pants from the waist, and are usually brightly colored webbing with a reflective strip sewn in the middle. Usually, the ring at the back is made of a heavy metal, which helps the braces to swing out in an arc around the person when spinning. These pants are usually confused with hammer pants worn by many rappers.
