The benefits of Graphing calculators

Technology No Comments

Graphing Calculators have assisted professional engineers and scientists since their invention. By the mid 80’s graphing calculators had replaced abacuses in the pockets of professionals, offering transportable and easy computation and manipulation of data.

Many students don’t realize how beneficial a graphing calculator is in math courses. Graphing calculators are recommended for math courses from pre-algebra onward, and college programs involving physics, calculus or statistics often require a graphing calculator. Successful high schools are offering class sets or requiring students to purchase a graphing calculator, so that students can familiarize themselves with the tool. Students can use the easy computation and manipulation of a graphing calculator during their Sat, Act, or AP placement tests to enhance their calculus abilities.

Graphing Calculators are similar to a laptop computer in many aspects, but are much lighter and less expensive.
Graphing calculators hold many types of data in the on board memory, including gathered statistics, games, notes, and mathematical functions. Manufacturers offer free software that can be used on the calculators they produce, from games programs to advanced tools that enhance calculus abilities. Graphing calculators are equipped with a larger screen than a standard calculator that users to see a visual representation of the work, and they display charts and graphs of data that users can easily manipulate. Calculator data can be saved to other graphing calculators or input in computer programs. Graphing calculators perform complex mathematical functions that standard laptops don’t without additional software.

Graphing Calculators are an invaluable tool for today’s students because they offer easy computation and manipulation of data, a significantly wider range of functions than standard calculators, and are less expensive than a laptop. Users can define their own formulas and inputs that enhance the calculator with increased calculus abilities, making them a necessary tool for college-bound students.

Tagua Nut Carvings

Collecting No Comments

Tagua nut carvings may look like they have been produced from finest ivory, but the truth is, it has never been anywhere near an elephant! The tagua nut is actually a very hard nut that comes from a tree known as the ivory nut palm. This nut can be carved and polished to a high degree, making it difficult to discern from elephant ivory. The paleness of the nut and the ease with which it can be carved has made it very popular as an adornment or decorative piece.

The tagua nut carvings have often been referred to as vegetable ivory, or corozo, and needs to be dried out before it can be carved. While fresh, it has a flaky brown skin and it shaped a bit like a small avocado. These nuts hail from the South American rainforest, where they are found on the ground, often haver having been stripped of their skin by animals and insects. After being dried, carved and polished, these nuts can be used for a variety of purposes, including making beads, jewelry, and even bagpipes! In many ways, the vegetable ivory of the tagua nut carvings can do a great deal to relieve the desire for ivory.

Many humanitarians and environmentalists strongly support the production of tagua nut carvings. Not only can their sale save swathes of rainforest from being cut down due to farming, they can also replace the trade of elephant ivory, where elephants are butchered solely for their valuable ivory tusks. In 1990, the Tagua Initative was started, a conservation-based enterprise that was devoted to creating economic incentives for harvesting these popular and valuable nuts.

It is interesting to note that tagua nut carvings have, in some ways, been with the United States a great deal longer than you might think. For instance, until inexpensive plastic buttons came along, about 20% of all buttons made in the United states were made with tagua nuts. Today, Ecuador is a country that is known for its skillful tagua nut carvings, which can come in the form of boxes, jewelry, keychains and other ornaments. Tagua nuts have been carved for many years, but international markets are just beginning to notice how beautiful this material is and how skilled the artisans who carve it can be.

If you have an interest in tagua nut carvings, you’ll find that there are many different options available to you!

If you don’t have time, there are sites on line that create the basket for you. Use the same idea but use a picnic basket. Put a note in the basket, ‘A little wine, a little cheese, and thou.’ This makes a great gift for your spouse for an anniversary.

Hunt for a private winery that offers unusual choices that you normally wouldn’t find in local stores. Some of the companies actually create wine to your specifications. If you want to give the gift that keeps giving, look for smaller specialty vineyards that offer a wine club. Memberships to the clubs vary with the company but often include newsletters, upcoming events and bottles of wine.

Renaissance Faire

Clothing No Comments

If you’ve never attended a Renaissance or Medieval faire before, you probably aren’t sure what to expect. Fortunately, the crowd and staff at these faires are almost always welcoming to newcomers, and there’s always a lot to do. In fact, there’s so much at the average faire that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Before you walk through the gate, it’s a good idea to have some conception of what the faire will be like and what’s available for visitors. Here are just a few things you’ll probably see and have the opportunity to participate in, as well as some tips on faire attendance.

First, you should make sure that you’re dressed to attend the faire. That doesn’t mean you have to be in costume, though many visitors do choose to wear garb in order to experience the event to its fullest. However, no matter what you wear, make sure that any exposed skin is thoroughly treated with sun block, and don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes! Most Medieval or Renaissance faires are on natural sites, which means you’ll be dealing with uneven ground, long walks, and occasionally even mud. Remember to bring water with you, too - or be willing to buy drinks at the many food stands you’ll encounter while you’re at the event.

One of the first things you’ll probably notice is the large number of people in costume. Many of them are visitors, just like you, but many are also volunteers or employees of the faire. They’re there to add to the atmosphere. Many of them will address you in character and attempt to interact with you - don’t be afraid to have some fun! You’ll encounter peasants, knights, gypsies, royalty and nobility, and lots more. Some faires incorporate fantasy elements, so don’t be surprised if you run into people dressed as fairies or other mythological beings.

The average Renaissance faire offers plenty to see and do. Visitors can buy tickets or pay to participate in tests of strength, archery and throwing games, guess your weight games and a lot more. Shows are also common. While you can’t participate in them, you’ll have the opportunity to watch jousting tournaments in full armor, falconry shows, nobility performing court scenes, dances, and lots more. Some of the performances will be followed by question and answer sessions, in which you can get to know the performers, and even meet some of the animals. You’ll probably learn a lot, and see some pretty spectacular things.

Don’t forget refreshment, either. Renaissance faires are known for their specialty foods and drinks. You’ll probably encounter some pretty outlandish things, like Pickle on a Stick, giant turkey legs, period treats, and more. However, you can also be sure you’ll find lots of old favorites, so there’ll be something for everyone. Faire can get very exciting, causing many people to forget about food and drink. Don’t be tempted to skip a meal or a drink, however. The sun is hot, and you’re doing a lot of exercise walking through the event. You’ll want to refuel if you’re going to feel your best. The faire is a great place to have a lot of fun, and if you know what you’re getting into, you can avoid any problems.

Model Horses

Uncategorized No Comments

Founded in 1950 in Chicago, Illinois, Breyer Animal Creations, often referred to merely as “Breyer”, is a division of Reeves International (which acquired them in 1984) and one of the oldest model animal companies to date. Breyer Animal Creations began as the Breyer Molding Company. The company specializes in model horses, although they have produced wildlife and domestic animal models at various times.

Breyer model horses are among the most coveted model horses amongst collectors. They company manufactures in excess of five million models each year, and they’re not only very realistic but highly affordable.

The company first garnered great recognition when in 1950 the F.W. Woolworth Company commissioned Breyer to create what is now known as the #57 Western Horse model to be used to adorn a mantelpiece clock. But Woolworth soon became inundated with requests from people who saw it and wanted to know if they could purchase just the horse as a stand-alone piece. Breyer’s reputation was almost instantly solidified and it has only grown even better through the decades.

Today, Breyer supplies Reeves with its single largest line. Headquartered in Pequannock, NJ, Reeves International was founded by Swiss entrepreneur Werner J. Fleischmann in 1946, and entered the toy industry as the U.S. distributor of fine European toys and collectibles to the ‘carriage trade,’ or toy specialty stores and upscale department stores. Reeves carries several well-known toy and model lines including the highly collectible Stieffs.

Every Summer Breyer holds a festival for model horse collectors called the Breyerfest. ‘Just About Horses’ is the Breyer company magazine.

All of the Breyer model horses have their origins as sculptures. Every one is hand crafted, without the use of any machinery, and hand painted using both airbrushes and traditional paintbrushes. Approximately 20 different artisans handle each Breyer model horse from its inception to the final brush stroke. By way of all this artistic, 100% human handling, no two Breyer model horses have ever been exactly alike.

Breyer model horses are approximately 12″ long by 9″ high. The Breyer Horse Traditional models are scaled to 1/9th the size of an actual horse. Most of the Breyer horse molds are made in this size, and these Traditionals constitute Breyer’s main product line. However, their total set of product lines is enormous.

There are some Breyer horses that sell at auction or on eBay for thousands of dollars. Scarcity, age, and condition influence the value of a given model horse. Experienced collectors consider whether or not a horse is part of a Regular run or a Special Run; a model’s color scheme; and whether a model is painted in a Breyer Special Color, of which there are currently six. The most important model names when collecting by color are Gold Charms, Wedgewood, Copenhagen, Silver Filigree, Woodgrain, Antique Bronze, and Antique Gold. These models are not intended to be the usual realistic depiction of a horse, but are intended to be decorative pieces.

Experienced collectors also point out that a specific piece for sale may look different in some details from its model line as featured in a Breyer company photograph. This is due to the aforementioned fact that each Breyer horse is totally hand crafted by up to 20 different people.

Although Breyer is far and away the most collected model horse and the most sought after, there are other fine model horse makers that some collectors prefer to or hold in similar regard to the Breyers.

One of these model lines is that of Stone Horses. Founded in 1996 and located in the lush countryside village of Shipshewana, Indiana, by Peter and Elaine Stone, the Peter Stone Company makes collectible model horses that are almost always hand-painted right on site, with numerous artists coming from all across the nation to work together in the beautiful setting.

Peter Stone says of the horses his artisans make, “I never get tired of looking at them.” One of the great appeal factors of the Stones is their limited availability, making them more prized. Like Breyer’s, no two Stone horses are ever exactly alike and the company strives to make its models as life-like as possible.

Based in Greenwich, Connecticut, Paradise Horses states that its mission is to recreate the horse ownership experience, especially with an eye toward fostering and furthering children’s seemingly natural love of horses, with a complete line of posable horses and ponies, as well as all of the tack, clothing, and accessories required to keep a horse happy and healthy. In May of 2008, Paradise was given two awards by the iParenting Media organization, with Paradise Horses and Barn Buddies both receiving awards for their exquisite craftsmanship and realistic appearance.

“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award from iParenting. Having our product recognized for its superior quality as well as for the experience that it provides to children is an incredible honor for us,” said Amy Pennington, President and CEO.

“I loved the concept of this product. I always wanted a horse growing up and, as it is for most little girls, was not granted my wish. Having a toy like this helps a child’s imagination to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality,” stated one of the iParenting reviewers.

Model and toy manufacturer ERTL began producing model horses and horse accessories such as trailers in 1997, adding them to its vast array of other toys and models ranging from cars to biplanes to toy farm machines. Although ERTL clearly strives to compete with Breyer and offer hand-painted, inexpensive model horses, they seem to use a flimsy and brittle plastic, unlike the quality hard plastic of Breyer models. But some of their models are nice looking all the same.

Sleigh Bells

Christmas No Comments

For many people, the melodic, rhythmic ringing of sleigh bells brings along inescapable images of winter and snowfall and the smell of Christmas, but were you aware that it goes much deeper than that? Sleigh bells have been with us for a very long time, and though we might be most accustomed to them in picturesque depictions a Victorian horse and carriage traveling through the snow, they actually go back quite a ways earlier!

Though today we’ll find them everywhere, the bells that we know as sleigh bells were once only used for horses. Archaeologists have found similar bells in England, and the most early ones date back to when the Romans inhabited the northern lands. This means that these bells have been a part of the horse’s harness for well over a thousand years. With this in mind, it can be thought that the bells were quite desirable, and they could be considered a sign of wealth and status.

You could also find single bells, extravagantly made of gold or silver, being used to decorate the warhorses during the Medieval age. These bells, called crotals, were definitely a sign of conspicuous consumption, and the ringing of these bells was thought to bring good luck and to ward off evil spirits and diseases.

It was not known when these ringing bells became common for wagons or sleighs, but it can be thought that the served both a decorative and a practical function. While of course everyone smiles to hear the cheerful ringing of sleighbells, they could also warn other people that there was a coach coming along the way, and on foggy nights, this could have saved lives. Sleighs can be difficult to stop without notice, and in many places, bells were required for the protection of those on the road.

During the nineteenth century, there was a fairly strong demand for sleigh bells, and they were mass produced in East Hampton, Connecticut. The bells that were made in this location were popular throughout the country, and these bells would adorn racing sleighs during competitions and the sleighs of people who just wanted to get around during the winter.

For many people, the first contact that they had with sleighbells was through the incredibly popular Christmas carol, known as “Jingle Bells,” though originally, it’s composer, James Pierpont called it “One Horse Open Sleigh.” Written in the mid 1800’s, this song is still sung at Christmas time and has been translated into many languages.

From ancient Roman times to the present, it is clear that sleigh bells hold a popular appeal, whether they are on a horse, or in our songs!
